Bradford Cathedral celebrates 10 years of Fairtrade support

Bradford Cathedral has become the first cathedral to re-commit as a Fairtrade place of worship,

Bradford Cathedral’s commitment to Fairtrade began with an award back in 2009, spearheaded by
Canon Andy Williams and his wife Jennie.
The cathedral continues to focus on Fairtrade by ensuring all its tea and coffee provisions are
Fairtrade as well as running a stall every Sunday after the morning Eucharist selling a whole range
of goods including chocolate, cooking oils and biscuits, as well as seasonable items like advent
calendars.

Yorkshire branded Fairtrade logos

You may have noticed that the Fairtrade Yorkshire logo looks slightly different from other Fairtrade places logos. We have added a white Yorkshire rose to the image.

We have produced a range of Fairtrade places logos for the 38 Fairtrade places in Yorkshire to use if they wish to which also incorporate the white rose.

Click on an image below then save to download it or email joanna@fairtradeyork.com if you would like me to send it to you by email.

Fair Trade Detectives

How many times have you visited a town or village and looked in vain for a cafe where you can get a Fairtrade cup of coffee or a shop selling delicious Fairtrade chocolate to satisfy your cravings? Perhaps you’re going Christmas shopping in a Yorkshire city and want to know where you can buy fair trade gifts for your loved ones. Well – at Fairtrade Yorkshire we’re here to help.

Our brand new web resource turns you into a fair trade detective – and helps you find fair trade goods wherever you are in the region.

Whenever you find fair trade goods in Yorkshire, upload the details to the website (it won’t be instant – just in case people take advantage!) and help others find the Fairtrade and fair trade goods we love.

Click here to go to the fair trade detectives website

The criteria are: it can be a shop, cafe or a regular stall for example in a church. They must be selling goods with the Fairtrade mark, or sourced from members of WFTO or BAFTS (UK Fair Trade Network).

If you’re a group wanting to promote the Fairtrade Detectives scheme at local schools and events we have pens and leaflets for you to give out. Simply contact us to order what you need.

Look for these marks.

Fairtrade Yorkshire Conference – Ilkley 26 October

Our special mini-Conference aimed at Places of Worship was a great success.

Around 40 people gathered in Christchurch, Ilkley for an afternoon of networking, brainstorming and celebrating Fairtrade’s 25th year. Deputy Mayor of Ilkley, Ros Brown was there cutting our amazing cake.

We were delighted that Tim Aldred, Head of Policy at the Fairtarde Foundation was able to join us and he explained how Fairtrade fits into his own faith and the life of faith communities around the world.

We shared ideas for making a splash in Fairtrade Fortnight 2020 and thought about how we can incorporate fair trade into our own communities and parishes. You can read a summary of ideas here. Summary of ideas to promote Fairtrade

We are grateful to the Ethical Jeweller, Shared Interest and Co-operative Wealth who all brought stalls.

Our Giant Human Mosaic in Hull for Fairtrade at 25

Thank you to over 150 volunteers who came along on Saturday 5 October to make their mark in Trinity Square in Hull.

The Lord Mayor kicked off proceedings and there was a real buzz around the stalls in Trinity Market all day.

The hats (which you can see made all the difference!) have been donated to the Mission for Seafarers.

Fairtrade at 25 celebration

Saturday 5 October sees Yorkshire celebrating the 25th birthday of the Fairtrade mark. We’re planning for around 150 campaigners and volunteers to amass in Hull’s Trinity Square to create a giant human mosaic in the shape of the Fairtrade mark. The volunteers will be a mix of local supporters of Fairtrade and Absolutely Cultured volunteers.

Here are the timings:

10-4 fair trade stalls in Trinity Market
10.30 – 11.30 registration and collect your hats and T shirts
11.45 gather in Trinity Square
12 noon – the Lord Mayor will kick off the event and the drone will start to take video and stills
12.30 likely end of mosaic

There will also be other activities throughout the day including performance art on the square and craft workshops inside Trinity Market.

Watch That’s TV Humber’s interview with our Co-ordinator, Joanna and Eve from Samsara Crafts one of Hull’s fair trade shops. They talk about the event and the 25th birthday of the Fairtrade mark.

Here are some responses from Hull Fairtrade campaigners who are getting involved on the day:

Hull has a long history of fighting for what is right going back to before the days of Wilberforce.  That spirit is alive and well today, giving rise to Hull as a Fairtrade City and all that involves.

Chocolate has been one of our passions and we are proud to have the Divine Chocolate UK warehouse within our city boundaries, and chocolate has often figured highly in our campaigning for Fairtrade.

Over the years we have engaged with many communities, schools, churches, businesses, etc., and Fairtrade Labelled chocolate has often been the product that started the conversation, the label leading on to talk about Tea and Coffee and all of the thousands of products which are traded in an ethical and sustainable manner.

So for Hull to be a focal point for 25th birthday of the Fairtrade mark, is just brilliant!

Peter

We first heard about Fair Trade back in 1981 when it was still a relatively new concept.  The ideas gradually became more widespread until in the late 1990s Fairtrade labelled products burst into the supermarkets.

Now we can get delicious Fairtrade coffee and tea everywhere, even on holiday.  To be part of this expanding movement is exciting and exhilarating.  However, more needs to be done, so we are still actively taking part in promoting Fairtrade , including the 25th birthday party for the Fairtrade Mark.  We hope that in another 25 years there will be no need for the Fairtrade Mark.  All trade will be fair!

Chris

How can you help?:

  1. If you are available for a few hours 11am to 1pm on Saturday 5 October this is your chance to become part of a nationwide campaign. The event will be filmed and photographed and the resultant photos and film will be used in local, regional and national publicity for the 25th anniversary. You can just turn up and join in on the day, come along to Trinity Market Hall by 11.30 and we’ll make sure you have the right clothing. All volunteers will receive a goodie bag as a Thank You.
  2. Download the flyer and Press release here and share them with your networks.
